Ausama Atwan
Locum Consultant Dermatologist

Ausama Atwan is a locum consultant dermatologist at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport and an honorary senior lecturer at Cardiff University. He holds MSc and MD degrees in dermatology (Cardiff University), the European Board in Dermatology and Venereology (EBDV), and the UK Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration. 

Dr Atwan has a special interest in dermoscopy and he is a former director of the Cardiff University dermoscopy course (2012-2017). Currently, he is a UK board member of the International Dermoscopy Society (IDS) and the national clinical lead for the Teledermoscopy implementation Programme in Wales. In September 2021, Dr Atwan founded the all Wales monthly dermoscopy teaching sessions for trainees. 

Dr Atwan has acted as principal and co-investigator in multiple clinical trials. He has authored several publications and two book chapters, including the dermoscopy chapter in the BAD approved book ‘Dermatology Training: The Essentials’ (2022). He is passionate about medical education, having supervised over 20 MSc research projects and been awarded with the Cardiff University Excellence in Teaching Award. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and the Academy of Medical Educators (FAcadMEd).
