Tony Denman worked in the NHS as a Medical Physicist for 36 years, 31 of them as Head of Medical Physics at Northampton General Hospital, before retiring from the post on 31st December 2007. He has considerable senior management experience and acted as radiation Protection Adviser for the hospital, other NHS trusts and local firms.

He developed and presented POPUMET and IRMER radiation safety training courses for a range of local health professionals. During this period he developed research links with the University of Northampton and was Visiting Professor there from March 2002 until Sept 2008, continuing research now as Visiting Researcher. The research, predominantly into the Health Risks of Radon, is internationally recognised.

He has over 130 peer-reviewed publications, one book chapter in ’Practical Radiation Protection in Healthcare’ (OUP) on radon and radiation emergencies, one DEFRA-commissioned research report on short term measurements of radon and has presented over 35 scientific posters and 45 oral presentations at scientific conferences.

In addition to his research activities, he has been until recently a Certificated Radiation and Laser Protection Adviser providing services to the University, local industry and the NHS.
