Tim Wreghitt
Honorary Consultant Virologist

Dr Tim Wreghitt has a BSc from London University, a PhD from Surrey University and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, where he is the treasurer and Vice President - elect. He has been in the Cambridge Regional Virus Laboratory for 31 years. He is currently the Regional Microbiologist for the Health Protection Agency for the East of England and Honorary Consultant Virologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. He is also a lecturer in Virology at Cambridge University. He was awarded an OBE for services to clinical virology in 2008.

He has a special interest in virus infections in transplant patients, especially donor-acquired diseases such as CMV. He has also studied these infections in immunocompetent patients. He has edited books on Toxoplasmosis and ELISA assays and is currently writing a book “Virology Made Simple” – aimed at trainee doctors, nurses, GPs and other health professionals.

In the last year, Tim has been responsible for establishing molecular tests for the diagnosis of avian influenza in humans in the Regional Microbiology Laboratories in the UK and for ensuring laboratory preparedness for the next human influenza pandemic.
