Richard Newton
Consultant in Paediatric Neurology

Richard has been a consultant in Paediatric Neurology to the Manchester Children’s Hospitals since 1983 and Medical Director from 1988 to 1997. He has authored many peer-reviewed papers and chapters, along with having been author/editor of four books; with a special research interest in febrile seizures, psycho-social stress in pregnancy and its relationship to adverse outcome, the immunological basis of childhood encephalopathy, headache and medical aspects of Down’s syndrome.

Richard is the past-President of the European Association of Learning Disability Medicine, and the British Paediatric Neurology association. He is the immediate past Chairman of the Education and Training Committee of the European Paediatric Neurology Society. Richard retired from clinical practice in August 2013 but continues with his research and education projects.

Following the birth of his son with Down syndrome, he became very interested in how best to use time together with parents, what language to use and what messages to give. He was a developer of the Scope Right-from-the start guidelines and worked with the Equal opportunities Commission on the same. His family experiences give him good insight into many of the issues addressed by the Disability Matters e-learning programme (as a module editor).
